Defensive Driving School Information
ELIGIBILITY:
If you have received a citation for one of the following charges and meet all the criteria listed below, you may be eligible to attend driving school.
CHARGES:
Speeding; Speeding 25 mph over speed limit or more; disregarding a stop sign; disregarding a red traffic signal; improper passing; improper lane change (moving violations). NO OTHER TRAFFIC CHARGES ARE ELIGIBLE.
LEVEL I:
Certified driver’s license history clearly shows that within two (2) years prior to the date of your present citation you have received no more than one (1) citation for an offense listed above. The magistrate/clerk will run your Alabama Driving History. If you are out-of-state, you will be required to furnish a certified copy of your driving history.
LEVEL II:
Certified driver’s license history clearly shows that within two (2) years prior to the date of your present citation you have received no more than two (2) citation for an offense listed above. The magistrate/clerk will run your Alabama Driving History. If you are out-of-state, you will be required to furnish a certified copy of your driving history.
IF determined by the court to be eligible, you may attend any defensive driving school approved by the court. You will be given a return court date. On or before the return date you must present to the District Court Clerk your Certificate of Completion from the school and pay $146.00 court cost. You will not be required to attend court that date if you have already filed said certificate and paid court cost. You may mail your certificate and court cost (cashier’s check or money order only) made payable to: Circuit Clerk, District Court Division, P.O. Box 668, Decatur, Al. 35602.
Enrolling in defensive driving school and furnishing the Court with a Certificate of Completion is your responsibility.
Upon receipt of the court cost ($146.00) and Certificate of Completion, your case will be dismissed. If you fail to return the ORIGINAL DRIVING SCHOOL CERTIFICATE and pay court cost by the return date a warrant will be issued for your arrest.
NOTE: You cannot attend Driving School if you have been within the last two years and/or you are a driver with a CDL License.
YOU MUST GET PERMISSION FROM THE COURT TO ATTEND DRIVING SCHOOL. APPEAR ON YOUR COURT DATE FOR DRIVING SCHOOL ORDER.
